Finding Resilience: Why Trauma-Informed Practices Matter More Than Ever
Finding Resilience: Why Trauma-Informed Practices Matter More Than Ever
Welcome to Mindful Moves: Trauma-Informed Insights, where we explore the transformative power of trauma-informed care and positive psychology.
I’m Caron Sanders-Crook, an accredited somatic trauma-informed coach dedicated to helping individuals—especially those on the frontline of care, nurses, and veteran spouses/partners—navigate their paths to healing and resilience.
Why Trauma-Informed Care?
As a nurse, carer, or even the partner of a veteran, you’ve likely witnessed or experienced the ripple effects of trauma. Trauma doesn’t just live in the mind; it embeds itself into our bodies, shaping how we move, feel, and interact with the world—being trauma-informed means acknowledging this connection and creating space for healing that honours the whole person. I am speaking from personal experience. I am a nurse, a veteran, and a veteran spouse. My husband has CPTSD, and it's tough holding down a job and supporting someone.
Through my work and my own personal journey, I’ve seen firsthand how small, intentional shifts in awareness can have a profound impact. Whether it’s learning to breathe through stress or reframing self-critical thoughts with kindness, trauma-informed practices provide the tools for rebuilding resilience—one mindful move at a time.
My Journey
My journey into this field began with a simple but life-changing realisation: healing isn’t linear, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. As someone who has seen and been a part of the incredible strength of carers and frontline workers, I was inspired to create a space where their unique challenges—and triumphs—are acknowledged and supported.
In my practice, I blend somatic approaches with positive psychology, empowering individuals to move forward with clarity and confidence. Each post on this blog will reflect this mission, offering practical insights and heartfelt reflections to guide you.
Your First Mindful Move
Let’s start with a simple but powerful exercise you can do today: grounding through movement. This practice is perfect for moments of overwhelm, whether you’re managing a chaotic shift or a difficult memory.
Find a quiet space: If possible, step away from the noise and give yourself a few uninterrupted moments. (I have been known to take myself to the loo to do this!)
Check-in with your body: Notice how your feet connect to the ground. Feel the texture beneath them.
Add movement: Slowly sway side to side or roll your shoulders in small, intentional circles.
Breathe with awareness: Inhale deeply, expand your stomach, and exhale fully, letting tension melt away.
Notice how this small act of mindfulness affects your body and mood. Movement is healing, and it’s often the first step toward reclaiming your sense of control and calm.
