The Power of Heart Energy: The Influence You Might Not See, But Others Can Feel

You’ve probably heard someone say, “That person gives off a certain vibe.” It’s more than just a saying; it’s something we feel deeply and instinctively. But have you ever paused to think about how far your own energy reaches? Studies show that the electromagnetic field generated by the human heart can extend several feet beyond the body. That means the emotional state you're carrying – whether it's peaceful, tense, open, or shut down – can quietly shape the space around you.

In my life as a nurse, a carer, a veteran, and the spouse of a veteran living with PTSD, I’ve learnt firsthand that our presence – what we carry in our hearts – has real weight. It can either calm a room or unsettle it. The way we show up – how we breathe, listen, and regulate ourselves – has a ripple effect. And when you’ve lived through trauma, this becomes even more important. Our energy can become a source of comfort, or it can unknowingly stir up old pain in others.

As a certified HeartMath coach, I’m only too mindful of the power of the heart, not just as an organ, but as an emotional compass and energetic force that shapes our inner and outer worlds.

The Heart’s Field: A Language Beyond Words

We tend to believe that it’s what we do or say that impacts people most. But sometimes, it’s what we feel and what others sense from us before we speak – that shapes the moment.

The heart generates a field that can be picked up by those nearby. You’ve probably felt it: that unspoken heaviness when someone’s having a rough day or the ease of being around someone who just feels grounded. When we’re centred, our energy can settle the room. When we’re overwhelmed, it can create tension that others absorb without even knowing why.

In a world carrying so much visible and hidden trauma, learning to manage our own nervous system becomes a quiet, powerful act of service to ourselves and everyone we encounter.

At Work: How Your Energy Leads the Room

If you’ve worked in high-pressure settings like healthcare or caregiving, you know how quickly energy can shift a team’s dynamic. One person walking in with unspoken tension can affect the entire group. You feel it in your shoulders, in the tone of conversations, in how smoothly-or not- things unfold.

But the opposite is true, too. I’ve stood in chaotic hospital rooms and care home corridors and made a conscious choice to stay steady. Not because I was unaffected, but because I knew it made a difference. Regulating my breath, softening my shoulders, and holding space without words – it changed how people responded. There was less defensiveness, more connection. Small shifts that made hard moments more manageable.

As professionals, especially in caregiving roles, our energy often sets the tone. Staying connected to your heart, not just your task list, isn’t a luxury; it’s a leadership skill.

At Home: Where Energy Hits Deepest

At home, the stakes are even more personal. The energy we carry doesn’t stay at the door – it becomes the background hum of our relationships. I’ve lived this as a partner to someone with PTSD. I’ve had to become aware of how my own stress or calm can either support or overwhelm him. It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence.

Some days I get it right; others, I notice the impact after the fact. But the lesson stays the same: your energy doesn’t just belong to you. It’s part of the emotional landscape you share with the people you love. The more grounded I am, the more I help my home and work become a space of safety and repair.

This is true with children, too. They may not understand the language of regulation, but they feel it. They know when you're scattered or solid. Learning to care for your own heart energy becomes a gift you quietly pass to them.

Simple Ways to Shift Your Energy and Create Calm

So, how do we become more intentional with the energy we carry? Here are a few things that help:

  1. Heart-Focused Breathing
Take slow, intentional breaths while focusing your attention on your heart space. This creates heart-brain coherence, helping your nervous system settle and shifting your energetic state in real time. This is a foundational tool I use regularly in my practice as a HeartMath coach, and I’ve seen firsthand how this simple technique can shift entire environments.
  2. Stay Rooted in Compassion – Practising compassion, especially when it’s difficult, can soften your energy. It doesn't mean tolerating harm – it means choosing not to add more to the hurt already in the world.
  3. Protect Your Boundaries – Your energy is valuable. Be mindful of who or what drains it. It’s okay to step back from situations that feel heavy or toxic. That’s not avoidance; it’s creating safety through insight.
  4. Regular Self-Care – You can’t give from an empty cup. Whether it's rest, movement, creativity, or silence, do what refuels you. It strengthens your ability to show up in ways that heal, not harm.
  5. Clear and Reset Often – Whether through writing, breathing, meditating, or just being still, find your way of shaking off what’s not yours. It’s how you stay light enough to keep going.

The Energy You Carry is the Legacy You Leave

Every room you walk into, your energy arrives first. Before a word is spoken, before a gesture is made, your presence speaks. And that presence has the power to offer peace, safety, and connection in a world that badly needs all three.

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to get it right all the time. But you can choose to become more aware. You can decide what kind of energy you bring into the spaces you share.

Ask yourself:
What do I want people to feel after being near me?
What kind of atmosphere am I helping to create at work, at home, and in my community?

Because your heart isn’t just a vital organ. It’s a quiet source of influence.
And when it’s open, steady, and kind, it changes everything.

With heartfelt and expansive love 💗💜💞

Caron 🙂
